Rachel grew up in Montana and received a B.A. in Elementary Education from Montana State University-Billings. After teaching in several areas across the US and the world Rachel went back to school for a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction and a PhD in Literacy Studies with an emphasis in Dyslexia Studies. She worked for the Colorado Department of Education for five years running the Early Literacy Grant before moving home to Montana to help support schools with the implementation of the MCLP and MCLSDP grants.

  1. Provide district TA support regarding grant requirements
  2. Make in-person school site visits
  3. Revising and maintaining Learning Hub Foundations of Literacy courses

In April of 2022, Sara joined the MCLSDP team as a Literacy Grant Specialist. She earned her B.A. degree in Communication from Saint Mary’s College of California along with a Multiple-Subjects Teaching Credential from CSU Stanislaus. She has over ten years of experience in education teaching reading, writing, and social studies at the middle school and elementary levels. Before moving to Helena, she became a Teacher Consultant for the Great Valley Writing Project. More recently, Sara worked with the Gifted and Talented program and the Comprehensive System of Personnel Development (CSPD) for the OPI.

  1. Provide support to MCLSDP districts on the literacy grant requirements and provide in-person support.
  2. Maintain Learning HUB Courses. Update/maintain documents for the MCLSDP Literacy grant requirements.
  3. Maintain the grant website.

Makayla Kennelly joined the Montana Comprehensive Literacy State Development Program in January 2022 after more than ten years of teaching in various settings across the United States. Makayla has a Master’s Degree in Education and a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development. She has taught across all grade levels from kindergarten to high school with experience in high behavioral-need settings, and elementary education. Makayla has been involved with writing several grants for schools in Oregon. She was also a consultant and traveled across the country to help show schools use Amplify’s CKLA curriculum.
