Montana Reads Book Club from the Montana 250th Commission

From the Montana State Library: The Montana 250th Commission recently launched a year-long series of virtual events designed to build excitement around the United States’ 250th birthday in 2026. “Montana Reads: The Treasure State's Book Club” is a monthly online book discussion that will cover exciting topics and figures from United States, Montana, and Tribal history.

Each month, a member of the Montana 250th Commission will lead a presentation and discussion on books that explore myriad aspects of our shared history - from the Founding Fathers to Montana statesmen and women, cultural traditions to amazing innovation. These monthly discussions will feature conversations around the books’ central themes, seeking applications to current challenges and initiatives facing our state and nation. Montanans are encouraged to participate in any and all of these events that they find interesting, and where possible to read the book in advance.

All “Montana Reads” events will be held by Zoom on the second Thursday of each month, from 6:30 – 7:30pm MT. The Montana 250th Commission is excited to share these stories with all Montanans and will be bringing in special guests where possible to further bring this history to life.

Upcoming events:

  • Thurs., January 8 – American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America by Colin Woodard
  • Thur., Feb. 12 - The Remarkable Cause: A Novel of James Lovell and the Crucible of the Revolution, by Jean C. O'Connor.
  • Thurs., March 12 – A History of Montana in 101 Places: Sites and Stories from the Montana Historical Society

Montana Place Names

The Montana History Portal is pleased to be the new home for the Montana Place Names map. This map is the companion to the book, Montana Place names from Alzada to Zortman, written and published by the Montana Historical Society.  Each point in the map links to an information item in the collection Montana Places Names from Alzada to Zortman. Each information page has an interactive map in the left side panel that allows you to pan and zoom on the point in the standard map or satellite view. Links on the right of the page take you back to the full map and, if available, show you an image of the place from our collections. This map and the corresponding information are an excellent addition to the History Portal, and we hope you enjoy browsing and learning more about Montana places.

Humanities Montana

Although Humanities Montana was canceling the Speakers in the Schools program due to the National Endowment for the Humanities loss of funding, Montana poet laureate Chris La Tray said he planned on continuing presenting across the state.

Chris La Tray has two programs: Montana's Poet Laureate and The Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians: Métis Buffalo Hunters of the Northern Plains

If your school has IEFA money available, you can use it to fund his appearance, and he is happy to help you with the logistics and reporting. This is also an option if you want to bring in other Native speakers, including ones who have been working through Humanities Montana, available on their website.

Chris is also actively pursuing alternative funding, so if you don't have IEFA money available, contact him and he will see what he can do.
