IT Resources for Schools
OPI School Technology Resource Program
The Montana School Computer Program is administered by the Office of Public Instruction (OPI) and collects computer equipment from state and federal sources, as well as private donations, to distribute at no cost to Montana’s K–12 public schools. The equipment is stored in Clancy, Montana, and is operational, but all data (including operating systems) is removed for security purposes.
Program Basics
Equipment accepted includes desktops, laptops, and tablets that are Windows 11 compatible and in good working order, as well as Chromebooks that can run the current version of ChromeOS. Printers and scanners may be accepted if they are not at end of life according to the manufacturer. All technology donations will be evaluated, so please do not hesitate to ask what we will accept.
- Schools are responsible for traveling to Clancy to retrieve equipment and must have an appointment.
- Equipment cannot be reserved because storage space is limited.
- The inventory of surplus equipment varies from day to day.
- The program maintains a waiting list of schools interested in equipment, and schools are contacted about their eligibility, usually by email.
- Contact the Computer Resource Program to request information, add your school to the waiting list, or check the availability of equipment. Please include your name, school district, school, and phone number in your email.
The OPI has distributed 34,561 computers and 21,678 other pieces of IT equipment since the inception of the program.
