Earlier this year, the Montana Legislature approved SB 203, which establishes Montana’s participation in the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. The purpose of the compact is to remove barriers to success for children of military families. Participation in the compact will facilitate a student’s eligibility for enrollment in educational programs and extracurricular activities, and the student’s on-time graduation.

Governor Bullock recently appointed BG (Ret.) Hal Stearns of Missoula as Compact Commissioner representing the Montana in the interstate compact. Governor Bullock also appointed the five individuals to the State Council on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. The education community is represented by Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau and Tammy Lacey, Great Falls Public Schools Superintendent. The Superintendent of Public Instruction serves as chairperson of the state council.

By the beginning of the 2014-15 school year, the Office of Public Instruction will be adding a designation to AIM, the statewide student information system, for children who are military-connected.
