Let's Get Kids Cooking mini grants awarded by Montana Team NutritionWednesday, February 27, 2013, 1:33 pm
Eight school districts and community groups were awarded a $500 mini-grant to support a cooking program for students. They include: Boys and Girls Club of Lewistown, Corvallis School District, Darby Public Schools, Ennis School District, Hot Springs Schools, Bozeman School District, Manhattan High School, Twin Bridges Public Schools. The goal of this program is to engage students in learning cooking skills while making a variety of healthful, nutrient-rich foods. USDA (commodity) Foods will also be supplied by the foodservice program to support the preparation of foods containing whole grains, a variety of fruits and vegetables and lean proteins or dairy foods. Many of the cooking classes will take place in afterschool programs and with involvement of student mentors from family and consumer science classes. This project is supported by a 2011 USDA Team Nutrition Training Grant awarded to the Office of Public Instruction.
