NW Regional Comp Center Hosts February 2011 Symposium

The Northwest Regional Comprehensive Center (NWRCC) will host a symposium, "The Common Core State Standards: Planning for Effective Implementation," on February 8-9, 2011, in Portland, Oregon. The purpose of the symposium is to address issues relating to the implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).  The Office of Public Instruction will send a team from the agency to learn more about the CCSS, and, specifically, how the state standards can align to the assessment systems.

In May 2011, state Superintendent Juneau will recommend to the Board of Public Education (BPE) adoption or, non adoption, of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics as Montana state standards.  If the BPE adopts the CCSS, the NWRCC will assist Montana next summer with the implementation of the standards and the alignment of the assessment system.

The state superintendent assures district personnel of her commitment to align the state standards to the assessment systems. Montana currently is a founding member of the multi-state consortium, Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.

For more information on the K-12 Common Core State Standards, please refer to the OPI Web site  If you haven’t already done so, the superintendent invites you to complete the "OPI Common Core State Standards Survey."
