Superintendent Juneau Convenes Second Meeting of Student Advisory Board

Students to Focus on School Climate Issues

HELENA, MT - Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau will convene the second meeting of Montana's first-ever State Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board (SAB) this Thursday and Friday, April 14 and 15. Students will gather Thursday evening at the Holter Museum of Art and at the Rocky Mountain Emergency Services Training Center on Friday.

The board consists of 40 high school students from 31 Montana schools. It was created as part of Superintendent Juneau's statewide initiative, Graduation Matters Montana. Graduation Matters Montana aims to increase the number of Montana students who graduate from high school through collaborative partnerships with schools, community organizations, businesses and youth. The focus of the second Student Advisory Board meeting is school climate.

“One of the themes I heard from the students at the first meeting was a desire for a welcoming school environment for all students, which includes peer-to-peer support as well as mentorship and supportive adult relationships. This convening will allow us to dig a little deeper into what changes in school climate students need in order to succeed,” Superintendent Juneau said.

Student Advisory Board members were first nominated by local school and community members and also had to apply for selection to the board.  The board members, in grades 9–12, are traveling from rural communities such as Wibaux and Poplar and from larger communities such as Billings and Missoula.

The meeting is partly underwritten by business sponsors Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana, the Student Assistance Foundation, Big Sky Printwear and the Holter Museum of Art.
