Montanans to Celebrate American Indian Heritage Day Friday

HELENA - Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau encouraged Montanans to join in the statewide commemoration of American Indian Heritage Day this Friday, September 24, 2010.  The celebration originated in 1975 with a joint legislative resolution that the day be observed the 4th Friday of September.

Communities, organizations, tribes and schools will observe and celebrate the distinct and unique heritage of American Indians throughout history and in contemporary Montana.  Popular activities include field trips, presentations by tribal experts, pow wows, parades and cultural demonstrations.

“American Indian Heritage Day provides an important opportunity to work together to build a bright future for all Montana students through the inclusion of American Indian histories, cultures and contributions in our classrooms.  Our state’s exciting efforts to build strong Indian Education For All activities, resources and programs continues to be a showcase across the United States,” said Superintendent Denise Juneau.
