Construction Grants and Loans
Where can I find more information about grants, loans, and other financing options for school construction projects?
1. As you may be aware, the Board of Investments has an Intercap program. This is a loan program rather than a grant or state aid. There are apparently two types: (a) one type for smaller projects (limit on square footage), and (b) larger construction - financed w/ voter-approved levy thru the debt service fund. Qualifying districts can borrow amount needed from Board of Investments to pay for construction right away so project can be completed, and then pay it back to BOI in installments through the annual levy in the debt service fund.
For more information about the Intercap Loan Program, see: http://www.investmentmt.com/BOIprograms_INTERCAP.htm
2. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Information on DEQ programs for schools is also available at: http://www.deq.state.mt.us/Energy/EESchool/FinanceSchool.asp
3. If you have any grant-writer contacts in your district, or outside your district perhaps in a larger district that could help with doing searches for available grants. For private grants, perhaps do a search on the internet for "school building grants" or something similar. All Federal grants are posted at the following website: http://www.grants.gov 4. If you have need for computer (technology) oriented construction like major wiring projects, you may want to contact Michael Hall (E-rate) at OPI, at 444-4422. 5. The QZAB program of the Federal government sometimes has options for funding for school-business partnerships.
