Scanning paper student records

We are a school district with a lot of student records that we are required to keep permanently.  Can we scan the paper copies and then destroy the paper copies?

Per Administrative Rule 44.14.202, records that have a retention period beyond 10 years, may not be retained in digital format as the official record.  Paper and micrographics are still the archive method for these file types.  Records with a shorter term of mandatory retention may be scanned for storage during the retention period for that type of document.  Please see the administrative rules 44.14.201-203 for Local Government Records at:  http://www.mtrules.org/gateway/ChapterHome.asp?Chapter=44%2E14
