I'm a Speech Pathologist - when communication has been checked on an evaluation plan, I have always assumed that a full and complete evaluation needed to be completed. My question: Is this a correct assumption or can a standardized screening tool, such as the CELF be given?
OPI – The Evaluation Report team determines what level/type of assessment is sufficient to determine the students eligibility and need for special education. So a standardized screening school may be sufficient in some instances to provide the information necessary to determine if the student meets with criteria for eligibility.
Also, can the SLP require sped teachers to consult with them before checking the communication area, to eliminate the amount of unnecessary referrals we are receiving?
OPI – This would be a local district practice to establish – there is nothing in state or federal regulations which would require (or prohibit) this best practice.
